 Central Park in New York City is located between the Upper West and Upper East Sides of Manhattan. Central Park is the fifth-largest in the city in terms of the area it covers, which is 843 acres. The park is also the largest frequented metropolitan park of the United States, with an estimated 42 million visits each year as of 2016, and is the most-filmed site anywhere in the world. After the initial proposals for a huge park in Manhattan in the 1840s, it was voted in 1853 and was expanded to 778 acres. In 1857 the Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux were the winners of a design competition for the park using the "Greensward Plans". The park's construction began in the year 1857 the existing structures, which included a majority-black settlement called Seneca Village, were seized by eminent domain and destroyed. The park's first sections were opened by the general public in 1858. Additional land on the northern side of Central Park was purchased in 1859 which was finally completed in 1876. After a time of decline at the beginning of the twentieth-century New York City parks commissioner Robert Moses started a program to improve the cleanliness of Central Park in the 1930s.
