John D. MacArthur Beach State Park was named in honor of John D. MacArthur whose Foundation gave a piece of the land to its construction in the 1970s. It is situated on and south of Singer Island, Florida in North Palm Beach, Florida. The park was first opened by the general public. It covers 438 acres of land and underwater, including an Estuary that is crossed by a 1,600-foot long boardwalk as well as Munyon Island, a wilderness isle located in the Intracoastal Waterway that was home to the extravagant Hygeia Hotel in the early part of the Twentieth century. The hotel was destroyed to the ground in 1917. The hiking trails and pavilions are available for use by the public at Munyon Island, which is accessible only via kayak or by boat. A section in the park called Air Force Beach from the beginning of the 1940s, until the park's renaming because it was frequented to bathe Palm Beach Air Force Base personnel. The bathing of naked people officially ended when the state took over the park in the year 1982. MacArthur Beach is a nesting site for sea turtles that are rare which include the endangered loggerhead, threatened green sea turtle and sometimes it is home to the rare leatherback.
